Amy Always Finds Her Way Back to Chani
A Border Collie, two daily walks, and a bond built in the ordinary moments between them.
As told by Chani
Before Amy was born, my youngest son, Eran, had already decided she would become part of our family.
Her mother, Polly, belongs to close friends of ours. When Eran heard that Polly was expecting puppies, he announced that one of her daughters would grow up with us. And that is exactly what happened. At three months old—when it was time for her to leave her mother—Amy came home.
She is six now, a black-and-white Border Collie with an energy that fills the space around her. But within just a few months of bringing her home, we began to notice something quieter: the way she responded to me was different.
When I return home, Amy’s happiness has its own intensity. She needs a few minutes of petting and hugs before she can settle again. And whenever I am home, she looks for me. No matter where I am, she finds her way to my side.
The signal for our walk
Our morning and evening walks are the rituals that belong to us.
The signal is not the leash. It is my coffee. As soon as I make a cup and start moving toward the door, Amy understands. Her excitement begins before we have even stepped outside.
In the evening, she knows the walk will end with one of two things: a treat, or a game with the garden hose. The hose is a particular favorite. She tries to catch the stream of water as it moves, completely focused and completely delighted.
These are small moments, but repetition has made them ours—the coffee, the door, the familiar paths, and the happy expectation of what comes next.
“Whenever I am home, Amy finds me. She always chooses a place beside me.”
The puppy who lightened lockdown
Amy was still a puppy during the COVID lockdowns. We were spending long stretches of time at home, and she brought movement, play, and a kind of necessary lightness into those days.
We played with her, watched her race through puppyhood, and let her joyful chaos interrupt the stillness. Having her with us made that chapter easier. She did not change what was happening outside, but she changed the feeling inside our home.
The walks worth keeping
Today, our walks extend beyond the paths around our home. Amy also joins me on treks with our regular group: nine people and five dogs, all moving together.
If I could preserve one part of our life exactly as it is, it would be these walks—both the everyday ones close to home and the longer trails we share with the group.
Perhaps a bond is not always defined by one extraordinary moment. Sometimes it is built through the moments that return every day: making coffee, walking toward the door, and knowing that someone is already waiting to go with you.
